main content Celebration of gardening

We tend our gardens with a justified sense of pride and satisfaction. Personal tastes in garden design makes each unique. Gardening is challenging, demonstrating humans’ ultimate control over nature and often we look to new bred varieties or imported exotics to meet our expectations.

The first English book of gardening appeared in the reign of Elizabeth I, the title page read “A most brief and pleasant treatise, teaching how to dress, sow and set a garden: and what remedies may be had and used against such beast, worms, flies; and such – like that annoy gardens…”

Gardens have progressed through the successive fashions of rose gardens; knot gardens; temples in groves and lakes in the landscape. Nowadays, they provide tranquillity, green space, fun and even hard work! They are also our main contact with the changing seasons and living things.
