Skills for life in Bromley Libraries
What is "Skills for life"? “Skills for Life” is all about gaining more confidence in using the everyday skills of:
- Reading and writing (literacy)
- Maths (numeracy)
- Computers and IT for beginners
- Learning or improving your English (for speakers of other languages)
Improving these skills can help you in many ways: get another job; help your children with their homework; look after your money; fill out forms; and much more besides.
For example, some of the things you can learn about are:
- Reading and writing - grammar; punctuation; spelling; handwriting; how to write letters.
- Basic maths - handling money; banking; budgeting.
- Computers - How to use a computer; set up an e-mail account; surf the Internet.
- Life skills – Getting a job, or writing a CV; looking after your health; basic cookery; personal development.
How Bromley Libraries can help you with Skills for Life:
All our libraries have:
- “Get On” collection – a selection of factual books and book/CD packs to help you with your reading, writing, maths, and learning English as a second language.
- “First Choice” and “Quick Reads” series – short, snappy, bite-sized books to whet your appetite for reading for pleasure.
- Information – come in and pick up leaflets or brochures giving details of free or low-cost courses going on near you.
- Friendly, well-trained staff - to help you find the books you need, get you started with using computers, or point you towards local learning providers.
- Regular and occasional learning events – please ask at your nearest library for details.
