Ambitious plans to develop 1000 new homes on council-owned land or acquired sites by 2022 have been confirmed as part of the draft Housing Strategy being proposed.

Consultation about the proposed draft Housing Strategy is underway, with responses being encouraged by Monday 21 October when consultation closes.  The draft Housing Strategy outlines 4 key priorities, which are:

  • More homes – increasing the number of homes in Bromley
  • Better quality, more affordable homes
  • Preventing and tackling homelessness
  • Supporting vulnerable people

Councillor Peter Morgan, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing said, “I warmly encourage interested people to respond to our consultation.  We are proposing ambitious solutions to help tackle the very severe housing difficulties residents across the Borough are facing.  We recognise the disquiet that many of us express, where our children will live and how we can find answers that will help tackle the problem.”

Councillor Morgan continued, “By doing this, as well as improving the lives of many many households, including families, we will also be able to save money and make better use of our limited funds.  We are realistic about what we can achieve, recognising the national and regional context but are determined to deliver the best outcome we can for our residents.”

As well as outlining measures to prevent and tackle homelessness, the draft Housing Strategy also sets out proposals to ensure that better quality and more affordable housing also comes forwards.  Measures to specifically support vulnerable people are also identified, including a commitment to house every child leaving care within the borough unless they have suitable support elsewhere.
