Big improvements in air quality secure Bromley’s place as the cleanest and greenest borough in London.

Updated data from the London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (LAEI) 2019 which provides data on air quality across London has been published which shows that in Bromley between 2016 and 2019 there has been:

  • A 23% decline in the annual average Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) concentration across the borough of Bromley, from 29.9m3 to 23.0m3
  • A 19% decline in the annual average PM 2.5 concentration from 12.4ug/m3 to 10.0ug/m3. This means that across the borough for the first time that borough wide we are within the World Health Organisation interim recommended limits of 10.0ug/m3
  • A 28% decline in the annual average PM 10 Concentration from 20.3ug/m3 to 14.6ug/m3.

Councillor Will Harmer, Chairman of Bromley’s Environment Committee, commenting on the figures, said, “The massive improvements in air quality over the last few years are hugely important to the health of all residents in the borough and underline Bromley’s status as the cleanest and greenest borough in London. However, we want to do more. While borough wide the figures are moving in the right direction, we need to target those parts of the borough where levels of pollutants are too high and in those parts where air quality is good, make it even better.”

Councillor Harmer continued, “To ensure we get the best data we have expanded our network of air quality monitors to 32, particularly across the north of the borough. We have committed to planting 5000 street trees which have been shown to improve air quality while our electric vehicle strategy aims to accelerate the take up of vehicles, including buses, that pollute significantly less.  We welcome the forthcoming electric bus trial in our borough which we are helping to facilitate and we want to see more of this, particularly on routes through our high streets, which will help support air quality still further and even more walking and cycling as well.”
