Residents, businesses and interested town centre visitors are encouraged to submit views on a draft planning document which will guide future development in Orpington town centre.

The 12-week consultation on a draft Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) for Orpington town centre follows earlier consultation in the summer of 2020. When adopted, this document will be considered when determining future planning applications in the town centre, supporting existing planning policy set out in the Local Plan and the London Plan. The consultation is now open and submissions can be made up until 1 June through the planning policy web pages on the council website

Councillor Peter Morgan, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing said, “I strongly encourage residents and those interested to take part in this consultation to help to shape this important document, which will influence Orpington town centre for years to come. We must carefully consider what is appropriate and desirable for this important town centre, to ensure the opportunities for work, leisure and housing are delivered to the benefit of local residents and businesses.”

Councillor Morgan added, “I am aware of the large number of comments already received as part of a separate planning application in the town centre. I would encourage those who made comments on this application to also take part in the draft SPD consultation and give their views on the future of Orpington Town Centre as a whole.”

Orpington town centre, lying to the southern end of the Cray Valley, is a major influence over a large part of the borough, providing shopping and leisure facilities for a large number of residents. This new guidance is designed to protect and enhance the vibrancy and character of the town centre to enable it to adapt and thrive. A Public Notice of SPD consultation is being published in the News Shopper.
