The Mayor of Bromley has delivered the news that Designer Drapes in Penge has won the best decorated shop competition for the Platinum Jubilee.

Designer Drapes were awarded a certificate with their new title by the Mayor in person this morning, along with a £100 gift voucher generously donated by the Glades.

Councillor Hannah Gray, the Mayor of Bromley said: “I am delighted to present this certificate to such a wonderfully decorated shop that has really captured the essence of Bromley’s Jubilee spirit, which I am seeing in full swing across the borough. I want to thank all residents who submitted their favourite displays for their lovely photos which has made it a pleasure to judge this competition. I am now looking forward to touring Bromley’s Jubilee street parties and to meeting as many joyful residents as possible as they celebrate Her Majesty’s outstanding achievement in style.”

Designer Drapes, the winning shop, had an extensive, colourful shop display including puppets of the Prince Charles and Her Majesty the Queen cutting a Jubilee cake.

Over 250 nominations were received in the competition for 24 shops across the borough. Special mention goes to Aitch & Aitch in Beckenham, Eliza Wade in Hayes, A Crafty Needle in West Wickham, and Sponge Kitchen in Hayes.

This competition follows grants totalling £30,000 being awarded to local business and community groups to decorate the borough’s high streets and shopping parades for the Platinum Jubilee.

In addition to the 305 street parties across the borough, the council is delivering a rich programme of Jubilee activities over the bank holiday, starting with a special beacon lighting ceremony in Crystal Palace Park tonight and including outdoor concerts and film screenings in Bromley town centre. Over 70 Jubilee themed events have also been planned in libraries across the borough, including craft events, history exhibition and author events.
