As Covid restrictions eased and visitors and residents continued their return to our high streets, the Bromley All-Age Autism Partnership and The Glades again brought a learning space to The Glades sh
The learning space was held in a converted storefront in The Glades and provided a hub for residents to pick up useful resources and guidance and to speak with SEND staff from across the borough for a better understanding of autism and ways in which we can all make our homes, workplaces, educational settings and social interactions more inclusive and autism-friendly.
Councillor Kate Lymer, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Children, Education and Families said: “I visited The Glades shopping centre during autism awareness week to see first-hand the fantastic work going on in the borough to provide support and advice on autism. I was impressed by the range of organisations that work in partnership within Bromley to provide support and services for people and families with autism.
“As we emerge from lockdown, the timing of The Glades autism initiative, steered by the council with key organisations including CASPA, Bromley Mencap, Your Voice Health and Social Care and Bromley Parent Voice, is perfect to act as a great way of communicating to everyone affected by autism to reach out and take advantage of the services available. It also helped to raise awareness on this important topic and send a clear message to adopt a kind and understanding approach to the way we all interact with each other day to day.”
Jason Rose, Chair of the Bromley All-Age Autism Board, said: "The learning space was a great opportunity to inform the local community about autism and help guide people with autism to the services that are available to them. I'm grateful to The Glades, Bromley Council and the passionate volunteers who made the awareness week such a success."
The past year, with its unprecedented period of change and disruption, has brought difficulties for all families but for people who have autism the impact can be huge.
Bromley Council is proud to have collaborated on this project, working with The Glades and partners from South East London Clinical Commissioning Group, CASPA, Bromley Mencap, Your Voice Health and Social Care, Bromley Parent Voice, parents/carers and young people and adults with autism to increase the understanding and awareness of autism across the borough to make everyday living easier and more enjoyable.
