Bromley Council will take over the enforcement of moving traffic contraventions on Bromley’s roads from the police from this month (September).
This is to improve compliance to avoid dangerous situations and keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible.
Road signs and road markings are there for a reason. Following the rules displayed enhances road safety and traffic flow and minimises congestion. Drivers who are caught on camera contravening rules including entering and stopping in yellow box junctions, failing to follow directional signs, such as one way, no entry or keep left, will be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice for £130, reduced to £65 if paid within 14 days. Councillor Angela Page, Executive Member for Public Protection and Enforcement said: “We are the final London borough to adopt this process as police no longer have the resources to continue taking action against those who do not follow road traffic rules. It is important we make drivers fully aware of the consequences should they not comply with road traffic restrictions and signs. Each location will have signs confirming the date that enforcement will begin. For the first two weeks we will issue warning notices without financial penalty, with charges introduced after this initial period has elapsed.
“Please watch out for these signs and comply with them and if you enter a yellow box junction, check to make sure your exit is clear and you will not have to stop within the box, so as not to block the road for other drivers.”
Councillor Huntington-Thresher, Executive Member for Environment and Community Services reinforced the safety message: “Just one car with two wheels over the line can block a yellow box junction in any part of the borough and this can cause considerable congestion and frustration to residents, whilst drivers ignoring banned turns can be highly dangerous, as well as annoying to other road users.
“A reduction in congestion should also have the benefit of reducing pollution and improving air quality, supporting the council’s broader objectives of efficient road network management and reducing carbon emissions towards a greener borough for residents and visitors.”
Both councillors expressed thanks to considerate road users for their safe driving.

- Moving traffic contraventions on Red Routes through the borough are enforced by TfL, not by Bromley Council. This includes the full length of the A21 through the borough and the A232 between Locksbottom and Shirley.
