main content Constructive days for secondary school pupils

14 April 2005

Year 8 pupils from Bromley secondary schools have been treated to a memorable day of hands-on activities and advice on careers in the construction industry.

Construction at Work 2005, organised by Bromley Education Business Partnership and held at Bromley College of Further and Higher Education, aimed to raise awareness of the variety of job opportunities within this industry, and the skills and qualifications required for the different career paths. Providing information at this age can help pupils focus on their learning and choose the appropriate options in Year 9.

Windermere Construction Skills Centre, the Construction Industry Training Board and Bromley Education Business Partnership involved pupils in practical activities, while David Lambert from Bromley College talked about major construction projects such as Wembley Stadium and the range of roles in the construction industry.

Teachers accompanying pupils felt the day was beneficial in demonstrating the need for team work and co-operation in the work place. Zoe Evans, from Cator Park School, said: “The activity highlighted the diversity of skills required for various jobs particularly for women in construction.”

Councillor Graham Arthur, Bromley's Executive Councillor for Children and Young People, said: “Innovative days like this, involving a variety of organisations, make a lasting impression on young people. Their minds are opened to the variety of careers available to them and this can give them goals to aim for.”
