04 August 2005

The Council has strengthened its commitment to improving all town centres across the borough with the appointment of Councillor Michael Tickner as portfolio assistant to Colin Bloom, Executive Councillor for Local Economy.

Within this new role, Councillor Tickner will have specific responsibilities for Beckenham High Street, an area he has represented since his election in 1978.

“Councillor Tickner has an excellent reputation, and is someone who has proven abilities in leadership and strategic thinking. Beckenham will benefit greatly from having a strong champion who has in-depth local knowledge to drive forward improvements that will ensure its continuing prosperity,” said Councillor Bloom.

“The village character of Beckenham is what makes it an attractive place to live and to run a business. Its varied and vibrant evening economy draws in people of all ages from surrounding areas. I’m delighted to have this specific remit to push for changes and improvements that will continue this momentum, and look forward to working with our active traders’ and residents’ groups. “ said Councillor Tickner.

In the last year the area has benefited from the start of Albemarle House redevelopment into luxury apartments after many years lying derelict, together with investment from the Council, which has enabled more community events to be held around St George’s Green.
