main content Curry powder withdrawn from sale

03 August 2005

Rajah brand Premium Curry powders have been found to be contaminated with Sudan I in an alert issued by the Food Standards Agency. The red dye could contribute to an increased risk of cancer and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose. The Council’s Food Safety Team is asking residents to look in their cupboards and throw away any of the affected products.

“Residents should have a hunt around in their cupboards for these products. If they have been bought fairly recently then contact the helpline number to arrange a collection and refund. If not, then please throw them away. We would like to reassure any concerned residents who have eaten the products recently that the risk is low and that no other Rajah products are affected.” said Rosemary Fordham, Food Safety Officer for the Council.

The Rajah Premium Hot Curry Powder and Rajah Premium Mild Curry Powder were on sale at supermarkets Somerfields, Budgens and Kwik Save, at Cash and Carry outlets and also distributed directly to smaller retailers and caterers.

The affected products, sold by BE International Foods, come in 100g tins and 425g tins and have a best before date of June 2008. They also come in a 400g packet with a best before date of June 2007. Products with later best before dates are not affected.

The company has undertaken a full recall of the above products. Residents can call the company's customer helpline on 0800 072 4090 to arrange for a refund and collection.
