Noisy resident told to keep it down
A noisy resident has been fined £1,150 for causing noise disturbance. Gary Jarvis of Palace Road, Anerley pleaded guilty and was convicted of ‘noise nuisance’ in Bromley Magistrates Court on 10 August.
“We take noise disturbance seriously, and believe our residents should not be made to put up with the anti-social behaviour of others. It’s unfair, inconsiderate, and should not be tolerated. Legal action is a last resort, but this case shows that we are not afraid to do everything in our power to prevent this kind of nuisance. We take care to investigate and follow up all of the noise complaints we receive - on average 4,000 per year.” said Councillor George Taylor, Executive Councillor for the Environment.
Mr Gary Jarvis was served a Noise Abatement notice in November 2004, but continued to cause disturbance to his neighbours by playing music and watching television at excessive volumes. The Council’s Environmental Health Team and Police subsequently seized all noise-making equipment, and commenced legal action. Breaching a Noise Abatement notice can result in a prosecution and a maximum fine of £5,000.
The Council runs a service that deals with noise complaints, available for all residents to call 24 hours a day. The team work in cooperation with the Police, housing associations and the mediation service. Noise complaints can be reported by calling 020 8313 4830 or 020 8464 4848 during out of office hours.
