Brooming marvellous Tree Week
Over 150 visitors ventured out to High Elms Country Park to learn about woodlands across the borough last week. Activities, run by Bromley Council’s Countryside and Parks Ranger Team to mark National Tree Week, encouraged visitors to think about why our woodlands are important. Locally sourced materials were used to run the family-based activities which included learning about the mythology behind broomstick making and the chance for visitors to make their own.
Countryside and Parks Ranger Nick Hopkins said "It is great to see so many people involved in celebrating Bromley's woodlands and wildlife. These activities help us to raise awareness about why our woodlands are so important. They hold many ancient and veteran trees for example, which provide fantastic habitats to species such as Tawny Owls and the Stag Beetle, Britain's largest flying beetle. They also offer a wonderful facility for residents to enjoy quiet walks and recreation".
Other activities included the history of tree dressing, where visitors used natural products collected from High Elms to decorate trees and the opportunity to make some leafy collages to take home. Information was also provided about what other woodlands exist for visitors to enjoy in the borough.
National Tree Week is co-ordinated by the Tree Council and encourages the public to celebrate trees and woodlands in their local area and 2005 marks the 30th anniversary of National Tree Week.
