main content Clean-up for shopping parades

21 December 2005

Shopping parades across the borough have received an early ‘spring clean’. The additional work to boost street cleaning enhanced many popular parades and was designed to encourage local shoppers to visit the parades more often. The cleaning blitz followed research that identified ‘appearance’ and ‘cleanliness’ as the main issues of concern to traders. The work included the removal of flytipping and graffiti, which is associated with anti-social behaviour.

“Local shopping parades are at the heart of the community. Our clean up was a direct response to listening to the needs of traders and a recognition that the street scene plays a part in successful local economy, where local people can shop in a safe clean environment” said Jo Rostant, Street Services Contracts Manager for the Council.

The clean-up concentrated on the following parades:

  • Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley
  • Cotmandene Crescent, St Paul’s Cray
  • Marion Crescent, St Mary Cray
  • Carlton Parade, Orpington
  • Kimmeridge Shopping Parade, Mottingham
  • Beckenham Road (Clockhouse Parade), Beckenham

Over 2 tonnes of rubbish and 250 metres squared of graffiti were removed in the clean up operation. The works were in addition to the normal street cleaning routines and included private areas that are not the Council’s responsibility to clean.

As a continuation of this work, businesses are being encouraged to join the Council’s ‘Purple Patch’ scheme. This is an initiative that engages local residents and businesses in keeping their neighbourhoods clean and tidy. For further information call 020 8313 4621.
