Funding boost for transport schemes
Road safety and transport schemes across the borough have received over £5 million of funding from Transport for London (TFL). The annual spending announcement for all London Boroughs was delivered on Monday. The grant will be used for a range of projects including encouraging walking initiatives and enhancing cycling facilities; maintaining the borough’s roads and creating school travel plans.
The figure represents a 17% rise from last years funding to Bromley and relates to the next financial year. The overall increase in funding to London boroughs from Transport for London was 2%.
"This is excellent news. The safety of residents is a priority and the increase will allow us to expand our already excellent road safety programme. This will include proposals for the introduction of new 20mph zones and the development of further educational material for use in schools.” said Iain Forbes, Head of Transport Strategy at Bromley Council.
The grant includes £80,000 given towards road safety education, training and publicity will include the development of a high-impact multi-media DVD for use in schools by teachers, pupils and Road Safety Officers. Further road safety projects that tie in the National Curriculum will also be developed.
The grant also includes £390,000 allocated to creating 20mph zones. Research carried out by the Council has identified two high-priority areas for implementation - Bickley East area, between Southborough Road and Blackbrook Lane and St Paul’s Cray area between Leesons Hill and Midfield Way. Consultation with residents regarding the proposed schemes will follow.
In addition, Bromley has received £80,000 to forge a new transport-related partnership across Europe. The London European Partnership on Transport (LEPT), in which Bromley is the lead, will allow Bromley and other London Boroughs to share expertise and advance transport that is both safe and sustainable.
“We are developing a reputation across Europe for our innovative approach to resolving transport issues and this is an exciting project which puts Bromley on the map. It should also enable us to attract funding from Europe that will help us tackle problems like congestion, which obviously affects us all.” said Councillor George Taylor, Executive Councillor for the Environment.
