Bromley’s pre-school special educational needs services and Early Support team have won a prestigious national award for their innovative work in co-ordinating services and support for very young children with special needs and disabilities and their families.

Based at the Phoenix Children's Resource Centre in Masons Hill, Bromley, the services, which bring together more than 130 professionals from a range of agencies, won the Transforming the Children's Workforce category in the SureStart Partners in Excellence National 2005 Awards.

The award was presented by Beverley Hughes, the Government’s Children, Young People and Families Minister, in the presence of Cherie Booth, at a ceremony at Lancaster House in central London.

Helen Norris, head of pre-school SEN services and headteacher of the Phoenix, said: “I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this success, our dedicated staff and, of course, our special children and their families; together we have achieved so much.”

Executive councillor for children and young people Graham Arthur said “This award once again recognises the cutting edge work being done at the Phoenix to co-ordinate help and support for a very special group of babies and children.”

Janet Ettridge, Bromley Primary Care Trust’s assistant director for clinical services for children and young people, said: “The award recognises this wonderful example of joint working between agencies which has delivered some significant benefits for the children and families that use this service.”
