The Food Standards Agency has recently issued a warning about a number of food products readily available from supermarkets and grocers which are contaminated with the illegal dye Sudan 1.

Sudan 1 can contribute to an increased risk of developing cancer but at the levels present in the affected food the risk is believed to be very small. The Agency has however said that it would be sensible to avoid eating any products containing the dye.

Food retailers and manufacturers have responded by withdrawing the affected products from sale. However, if you are concerned that you may have some of the affected products in your fridge, freezer or cupboard the Food Standards Agency have published a list which is updated as more information becomes available. Alternatively contact a member of the Food Safety Team for advice on 020 8313 4830.

If you find that you do have any of the affected products you are advised to return them to the place from where they were purchased.
