The motion, backed by all three political parties, said that the Council "will continue to offer support and encouragement to the fulfilment of the wider Olympic ideal and looks forward to the success of the bid".

But Councillors also agreed that "the financing of the Games should not fall entirely on the taxpayers of London, but should be equitably distributed nationally in view of the considerable benefits which would be gained not only for London but for the United Kingdom."
