Bromley's Mayor to recognise young people's achievements
Young people throughout Bromley continue to record outstanding achievements in music, the arts, sport and many other fields of endeavour. But while the local press is full of stories of individual success, these have often gone without civic recognition. The Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Mrs Anne Manning, will put this right at a reception to be held at the Civic Centre on 19 April 2005.
The event will be by special invitation and nomination forms are being sent out to schools and colleges as well as youth agencies, uniformed organisations and sports groups. The event is aimed at the borough's top achievers and those who have succeeded despite special educational needs, learning difficulties or disabilities. Examples of those who might be nominated are:
- Duke of Edinburgh's Award winners at Gold level;
- outstanding young musicians;
- high achievers in national/regional competitions such as the London Youth Games;
- young people making an outstanding contribution to voluntary work;
- young sports men and women selected for international teams;
- those gaining high level awards from uniformed organisations such as the Scouts or Cadet Companies; and
- representatives of Clubs/Societies which have achieved outstanding success.
Councillor Mrs. Manning said: "The Council wants to give clear messages of reward for young people who behave well and indeed achieve extraordinary success. Bromley is full of outstanding achievers and it is important that they are given the recognition they deserve. It is so important to redress the negative image which is often portrayed in the media. I do hope that the organisations which we are approaching will send in their nominations to make sure that the event in April is a success".
Any local organisation wishing to make a nomination but which has not received a form can download it from the Council's website by searching under "Recognising Young People's Achievements".
