main content Council to support Tsunami relief effort

11 January 2005

Paving the way for a sustained, Council wide response to the recent tragic events in South East Asia, Councillors agreed to explore the possibility of the Council and its staff funding a specific project to assist in the long term restructuring of the region at a meeting of the Executive last night.

The Chief Executive, in consultation with the Mayor, the Leader and staff (some of whom originate from and have family in the area affected), will now look at identifying potential projects, particularly those that will support young people affected by the Tsunami.

Meanwhile, residents enquiring how best to offer their support are being encouraged to make donations to the Disaster Emergency Committee, the umbrella group for UK charities including the British Red Cross, CAFOD, Oxfam and Save the Children, at www.dec.org.uk.

Council Leader Stephen Carr said: "We have been deeply shocked by coverage of the Tsunami's impact on those living in its wake, both as a Council and as a borough. In tandem with our residents' and staff members' generosity to date and ideas around future support, the Council is committed to making a long term contribution to rebuilding people's lives in the region and look forward to adopting a suitable project in due course."
