Bike Week, the UK’s annual celebration of cycling, had over two thousand events nationally. One such event at Norman Park, Bromley saw over six hundred budding cyclists turn out where there were loads of events and entertainers all to encourage cycling. Many fun events were aimed at novice riders, children or those who have lapsed from cycling.
“This year’s event was bigger and better than last year as we had loads of activities for adults and children alike. We want to encourage children to cycle so we had a special area where young children could have their stabilisers removed from their bikes as they took their first paces on their bikes alone. For the older children there were two bike skills classes ready to help them ride on the road,” said Louise French, School Travel Plan Officer at the London Borough of Bromley.
Adults were challenged by Catford Cycle Club to see how fast they could complete five hundred metres on their static bike. The winner of this competition, in just over thirty one seconds, was Peter Johnson from Beckenham, who won a new mountain bike, courtesy of Bromley’s Road Safety Unit. Other entertainment throughout the day was from Rich Johnson, who has been on Blue Peter and The Big Breakfast, with his stunt demonstrations. Many people tried out new and usual bikes such as Penny Farthings and a one hundred year old bike.
