Bromley primary schools' athletics championships 2005
Highfield Junior School retained their title at the recent Bromley Primary Schools' Athletics Championships in a very close event. Going in to the final event the relays Highfield, Marian Vian and Oak Lodge were separated by only four points. Highfield ended up winning by a single point from Marian Vian with Oak Lodge in third. In the parallel championship which uses special scoring to enhance competition from small schools, Gray’s Farm Primary was the winning school with St John’s CE in second place. Among spectators braving the rain to support competitors were The Mayor of Bromley - Councillor Mrs Joan Wykes OBE, and Councillor Graham Arthur - portfolio holder for children and young people.
For the last 16 years participating schools, represented by nearly 1000 children, have competed in a series of heats throughout June for a place in the finals. This year 37 schools entered into competition and eight schools won through to the main competition plus a further seven qualified on the special scoring system geared to smaller schools.
The events reflect the basic athletic actions of running, jumping and throwing. The aim is to foster positive attitudes to physical activity, teamwork and competition.
Senior pupils from Kelsey Park were involved in the officiating for all the heats and the final as part of their work in sports leadership. Another official was Alex Al-Ameen a former pupil of Valley Primary School now a pupil at Sedgehill School and past winner of the 500 metres at this event. Alex is now an athlete with Blackheath and Bromley Harriers and a Great Britain junior athlete. This goes to show that this event could be a starting point for stars of the future and maybe even future Olympians destined for London 2012.
Bromley is fortunate to be able to organise events such as this. Sponsorship for the event is received from Blackheath and Bromley Harriers Athletics Club and Bromley Council.
