main content Glow-worms light up High Elms

22 July 2005

Why not join rangers from the Countryside and Parks Service at High Elms Country Park on Saturday 30 August at 9:00pm for The Big Glow-Worm Hunt? Alternatively, you could visit your local nature reserve at Scadbury Park or Jubilee Country Park that evening to search for glow-worms.

Countryside Ranger Alison Bolt said: "The idea is that people spend an hour or two walking around their local countryside or green-space site after it gets dark (in groups of three or more and with a suitable torch) wherever there's a meadow area, tall grass in front of a hedgerow, a churchyard or even a woodland with wide glades to see if they can spot the distinctive bright green spots of light of a glow worm. Children must always be accompanied by an adult.

‘Parts of Bromley's well-marked circular walk routes could be ideal for spotting glow- worms and we need people to tell us if they spot one or more of these fascinating creatures. Once we know where glow-worms can still to be found in Bromley, we can look at how best to adjust the management of their natural sites to suit their requirements.

‘Anyone who wants to be involved can let us know where they plan to look or ask for suggestions of where to go searching in their locality. We'd also like to hear from older residents who can perhaps still remember seeing glow-worms when they themselves were school-children, when there was much less in the way of street lighting."

If you are keen to be involved, but not sure where to look, or what to look for, please contact the Bromley Countryside and Parks Ranger Service on 01689 862815 or email countryside&parks@bromley.gov.uk.
