Teenagers in football tournament to raise money for new kits
Kathy Wickes, Area Youth Services Manager at Prospects Youth Services knew just what to do when her neighbours were chastising a group of teenagers for playing football in the street near to her house in Walden Avenue.
"I invited the boys to come and play football at the Castlecomb Youth Centre, Mottingham. I brought them to the centre for the first time three months ago and now they come regularly every Tuesday and have not played football on Walden Avenue again", explains Kathy.
Bromley Youth Service provides facilities and activities for young people from centres and detached projects across the borough.
"We provide a warm, clean safe environment for young people whilst catering for what they want to do. I was not only worried that the boys relationship with the neighbours was fraught but also that they were playing football on the road" said Kathy.
Such a success, the young people are now raising money to purchase kits for the football teams by holding an open day and football tournament on Saturday 4 June. The tournament is taking place between local youth centres, Grassmead Youth Centre, The Duke Youth Centre and The Link Youth Centre between 10am and 1pm at the Link Youth Centre, Midfield Way, St Paul’s Cray, Bromley, BR5 2QL. Other activities on the day include a car boot sale, bouncy castle, face painting, treasure hunt and beat the goalie.
"Everybody is welcome on the day", continues Kathy. "The young people from the youth centres have worked tirelessly to leaflet houses in the St Paul’s Cray and adjoining areas. We hope it will be a great success as they really deserve to get some new football kit".
