main content Financial help for vulnerable homeowners

10 March 2005

Vulnerable homeowners could soon be eligible for help from the Council to carry out essential repairs to their properties.  Interest free loans, only repayable when the property is sold, will be available to help those on low incomes who would not otherwise be able to finance repair work and adaptations.

The move is aimed at supporting other Social Services and Housing and Council initiatives to enable more people to live independently in their own homes for longer, especially older people.

The Council has teamed up with the not-for-profit Home Improvement Trust which will administer the scheme and set up a helpline advisory service.

At his Portfolio meeting on Tuesday 8 March, Executive Councillor for Social Care, Health and Housing, Councillor Chris Phillips, gave the go ahead for the scheme to be developed.

Councillor Phillips said: "Through the Council’s Building a Better Bromley vision statement, we have shown our commitment to promoting the independence of older people, by offering support for them to live for longer in their own homes."

"Giving some of our most vulnerable residents help to carry out essential repairs and adaptations to their properties in this way will contribute to improving the quality of their lives."
