Junior citizens of today
Children from schools across the borough were given the opportunity to try out their citizenship skills during a workshop this week given by organisations including the Met Police, London Fire Brigade, The British Red Cross and Transport for London. Encouraging today's children to be the responsible citizens of tomorrow is the theme of the Junior Citizen Scheme which runs through the year and is organised by Bromley Council and the Met Police.
The scheme teaches children in Year Six - who are shortly to make the transition to their secondary school - how to cope with everyday dangers safely and effectively. It provides a practical training ground for youngsters preparing to venture into the wider world whilst at the same time encouraging good citizenship and a sense of community responsibility.
Children take part in inter-active scenarios that require them to make decisions about personal safety and the safety of others, while raising their awareness of danger and the consequences of criminal actions. Themes covered include mobile phone crime, road safety, train safety, drugs and alcohol education, fire safety and first aid.
Councillor Colin Smith, Bromley Council's Executive Councillor for Community Safety and Chairman of the Safer Bromley Partnership said: "These workshops have been fantastic. Children in Bromley today are presented with a wealth of exciting opportunities, but also many new dangers. The workshops help them learn the potential pitfalls in a fun environment and it's very obvious that they have enjoyed and benefited from the experience."
The next Junior Citizen Scheme week will be held in April.
