Could you be our next environment champion?
Residents, businesses and schools who help the local environment could qualify for a prize in Bromley Council’s Environment Awards. This year’s celebrity guest, Country File presenter John Craven, will help hand out the cash prizes and certificates at this year’s Mayoral awards ceremony to be held in June.
"We know that many people care passionately about the environment and that they are involved in projects that help keep our borough a great place to live, work and play. The awards recognise and reward these people and now is the time to nominate your Environment Champion. We need to know who you want to nominate and why. Don’t leave it to someone else to nominate the person or group you are thinking about, as they might not get nominated" said Kay Spurrier, Environment Promotions Officer.
Last year’s overall winner, 18 year old Howard Clark, set up his own volunteer group to restore his local park to its former glory. Vandals and graffiti artists had left their mark in Hollydale Park and local people had been put off using this peaceful green space. As a result of Howard’s intervention the park is now a tranquil haven for people and wildlife. After his success in Bromley’s Environment Awards, Howard went on to be recognised by The Mayor of London at the GLA’s London Day Awards which paid tribute to 1,000 Londoners who had made a difference to life in the capital through their work, their community involvement or a personal act.
Howard said, "I was delighted to be nominated in Bromley’s Environment Awards and even more pleased to find out that I had won! I thoroughly enjoyed the awards ceremony and this year I will be nominating the Friends of Hollydale Open Space for their efforts in restoring the park. I would urge everyone to think about either entering the awards themselves or nominating someone they know who makes a difference to life in Bromley."
There are categories ranging from businesses to schools, community groups to individuals, households to the built environment. If you would like more information or know someone who deserves recognition for their efforts, please call the Green Team on 020 8313 4989 or e-mail:
