200th reward for real nappies
Beckenham mum, Emma Chan received the 200th real nappy reward from Bromley Council last week for choosing washable nappies instead of disposables.
The £30 reward is given by Bromley Council to say ‘thank you’ to parents who use real nappies because, by doing so, they help to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Thirty five thousand disposables are thrown away each day in Bromley and cost the Council about £150,000 a year in disposal charges. Using real nappies also makes financial sense for parents as they can save at least £500 per child.
Emma, who bought her nappies from Beckenham based company, Mumi Ltd. said, “Changing to real nappies has made a huge difference to the amount of rubbish we throw away each week and makes me feel that I am doing my bit for the environment. As a family, we are saving money by not buying disposables and the reward from the Council is an added bonus! Also, I’m much happier knowing that I’m using natural materials against Henry’s skin, so I feel I’m doing the best for him too.”
Kay Spurrier, Environment Promotions Officer said, “Many people still think of washable nappies as the old terry towels, nappy pins and plastic pants. In fact today’s modern nappies are much easier to use. There are different styles and patterns to suit most babies and budgets, and washing them at home is really easy. However, if you prefer, there are laundry services that will do the washing for you. Whatever you do, if you use real nappies you may be entitled to our £30 reward.”
To apply for the reward you will need proof of purchase and confirmation from your health visitor or midwife that you are using real nappies. For more information and a reward application form please contact the Green Team on 020 8313 4913 or visit www.bromley.gov.uk/realnappies

Notes to Editors:
There are a number of different companies and agents who supply real nappies and although the Council can supply a list of known local suppliers, it does not recommend any particular organisation or company. This does not necessarily constitute a recommendation.
