After a manic start to the day, the sun shone on Bromley’s young athletes on the day that thousands pounded the capital’s streets to compete in the annual London Marathon.
The bus transporting the young athletes was almost an hour late and plan B was about to be put into action - a mad dash to the rail station. When the bus finally arrived the young athletes had to negotiate police cordons and barriers to fight their way to the start. With two minutes to spare and after a dash across Southwark Bridge as their warm-up, the 15-17 year old boys lined up to compete in the 5k race.
Bromley’s team, sponsored by Blackheath and Bromley Harriers AC, excelled yet again and retained 2nd place with phenomenal performances by Danielle Critchely and Philip Sesemann, who were placed 2nd and 3rd in their respective age groups.
Tina Slater, Bromley Mytime Sports Development Officer, said "Every member of the team did brilliantly well, especially after the tense start to the day. This high profile event really shows up Bromley’s talent and to retain 2nd place was an added bonus! Parents and volunteers deserve a huge vote of thanks, without their calm and supportive attitude the Bromley squad may never have made the starting line!"
