main content New Mayor appointed

13 May 2005

Councillor Mrs Joan Wykes of Chislehurst Ward has been elected Mayor of Bromley for 2005-06 at the annual Council meeting on Wednesday, 11 May. As one of her first mayoral duties she has appointed Councillor Michael Turner of Plaistow and Sundridge Ward as Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Mrs Wykes said: "It is a great honour to have been elected Mayor of the London Borough of Bromley. During my thirty five years in local government I have been involved in many areas of work and I look forward to my year in office." The Mayor's charity for the year will be announced in due course.

The Council meeting also appointed Councillor Stephen Carr of Bromley Common and Keston as Leader for the second year running and eight other members of the Executive.

Councillor Carr said: "I am delighted to have been reappointed and am determined to continue the work we have been doing over the last year towards Building a Better Bromley for residents."

The other Conservative members of the Executive are Councillors Graham Arthur, Colin Bloom, Chris Phillips, Neil Reddin, Colin Smith and George Taylor. The Liberal Democrat and Labour members continue to be Councillors Chris Gaster and John Holbrook respectively.

The Conservative members of the Executive will each be responsible for one of the Council's seven portfolios. In a change from last year, the Strategy and Resources portfolio has been split into the Strategy and Communications and Resources portfolios. The new Resources portfolio and PDS Committee will provide greater focus and leadership on matters including finance, property, human resources and information systems. Meanwhile, the addition of communications reflects the growing importance placed on listening and responding to our residents in the Council. In addition, the Community Safety and Leisure and Culture portfolios merge into the Community Safety and Leisure portfolio. The allocation of portfolios to Executive Members will be decided at the first meeting of the new Executive on Monday, 16 May.

The Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen and memberships of the Council's Policy Development and Scrutiny (PDS) Committees and other Committees were also appointed. The Chairmen of the main Committees are as follows:

  • Strategy and Communications PDS - Councillor Russell Mellor
  • Resources PDS - Councillor Ernest Noad
  • Children and Young People PDS - Councillor Mrs Anne Manning
  • Community Safety and Leisure PDS - Councillor Alexa Michael
  • Environment PDS - Councillor Samaris Huntington-Thresher
  • Local Economy PDS - Councillor Martyn Reddin
  • Social Care, Health and Housing PDS - Councillor Charles Rideout
