main content Tennis is a smash hit with local primary schools

Over 40 children from five local primary schools enjoyed a festival of tennis this week and took their first steps to becoming a smash-hit tennis star.

Children from Redhill, Manor Oak, Leesons, Midfield and Marjorie McClure special school took part in the festival organised by Bromley Mytime’s Sports Development unit.

Bromley Tennis Centre played host to the event on their impressive indoor courts and the Mini Tennis skill stations included wacky races, ball skills, target smash as well as beat the Tennis Pro.

Daphne Gilbert, School Sport Coordinator for the family of primary schools in the Chislehurst and Orpington area said; "its so good to see the children come together and have the opportunity to take part in this event at such a great facility, hopefully they will be inspired to carry on playing tennis".

Each class was kept active all afternoon and everyone concentrated on winning points for their team, helped out by Newstead Wood School pupils as part of their Sports Leaders UK Award in Community Sports Coaching.

However, it was the 'Skill Sharks' team from Redhill that were victorious, but as Alison McCann, Bromley Tennis Development Officer, pointed out "this event was always about the children having fun and participating in Mini Tennis, regardless of ability level, we want to help create a culture of sport in schools and ensure that facilities like this are accessible to everyone".

Teachers took away some good ideas to use with the children at school, and also leant that the Mini Tennis concept is all about the fundamental skills that children need to learn at this age.

As part of the LTA’s campaign 'Do more than just watch PLAY TENNIS' Kent LTA and London Active Partnership work with Bromley Mytime and other boroughs to provide accessible tennis opportunities for young people all year round.
