Cameras enforcing parking rules in Market Square
Cameras are being used for the first time to stop drivers illegally using the loading bay in Bromley. Drivers parking in the loading bay in Market Square who are not loading or unloading from goods vehicles risk fines of up to £100 for not complying with the parking regulations. The action follows problems of congestion through Market Square because of the illegal use of the loading bay and the nearby bus stop.
“Motorists need to understand that they cannot use the loading bay as a quick parking bay to dash to the cash point or grab a take-away. If they do, they shouldn’t be surprised to receive a fine in the post. This loading bay is designed to allow businesses to receive goods, which are too big to transport easily. This inconsiderate parking can sometimes lead to traffic jams extending to Kentish Way” said Councillor George Taylor, Executive Councillor for the Environment.
The camera crackdown in Market Square went ‘live’ after the Council’s parking team had issued three weeks of warning tickets to motorists flouting the rules. In this period, 300 warning notices were issued. Parking Attendants also warned drivers about impending camera enforcement policy.
Parking attendants will continue to enforce the parking regulations in Market Square and motorists who receive a ticket will not be penalised twice for the same offence. Motorists still have a 14 day period to pay fines and their 50% discount starts from the day the penalty charge notice is posted. Normal appeal procedures still apply.
Although the camera enforcement policy is designed to make loading easier for delivery drivers, goods vehicles which are not parked within the bay markings or not loading will also incur a fine. Restrictions also apply at night, even when the bay is transformed into a taxi rank. Bus lane camera enforcement is already taking place. If the camera enforcement scheme is an effective deterrent against parking, it is likely that more locations across the borough will be targeted.
