Where were you on 15 October?
This date is important, as you need to complete the electoral registration form for the address you were living on that day. Anyone not completing and returning this before 25 November 2005 will not be included on the new register, entitling them to vote in next year’s local elections.
“93% of forms delivered to households have now been completed and returned, but that still means about 8,600 households haven’t yet provided their details, which they are required to do by law. Every time there is an election we get calls from people who are disappointed because they cannot vote, simply because they haven’t taken the time to complete the registration form now,” said Chief Executive David Bartlett, who is the Electoral Registration Officer for the borough.
Parents are often unsure whether to include students studying away from home on their form. Regulations state that they can register both at home and where they are living to study.
Another area of uncertainty can be for those in the process of moving home. People should register wherever they were actually living on 15 October. The option to apply for a postal vote is open to everyone, so they will not have to travel back to their original address to be able to vote at the local elections next May.
The new Electoral Register will be published at the beginning of December and will be available for inspection at the main reception, Civic Centre, Bromley. For any enquiries that relate to registration or voting call 020 8313 4364 or email electoral@bromley.gov.uk.
