main content Tesco expansion plans approved with conditions

A planning application by Tesco to expand their store in Elmers End was approved at last Tuesday’s Development Control Committee meeting. In conjunction with this, a new bus terminal and transport interchange was also approved on an adjoining piece of unused land. Both applications were subject to conditions and legal agreements designed to safeguard the local environment.

“We accept that there is a need to expand the store and do not believe this should have a detrimental impact on nearby centres. The proposed new bus terminal alongside the railway and Tramlink station will not only introduce a better public transport interchange but hopefully will reduce the need to travel to the store by car and improve bus travel locally” said Councillor Tony Wilkinson, Chairman of the Development Control Committee.

The enlargement will include single storey extensions to the store to improve the layout and provide better facilities, an extension to the current ‘surface’ car park and a ‘decked car park’ over part of it. The number of parking spaces will be increased from 393 to 564.

The bus terminal and interchange will be accessed via a new signalised junction from Elmers End Road and built at approximate cost of £2m, which will be paid for by Tesco. The facility will be handed to Transport for London (TFL) to operate on a long lease at a peppercorn rent and will provide better access to the store by public transport.
