main content 'Green fingers' plant trees to celebrate new start at secondary school

14 September 2005

Pupils beginning a new year at Kelsey Park School will notice some changes to their school's scenery. Year 6 children have planted a number of trees around the school to symbolise and celebrate their new start at secondary schools in the area.

The children came from a variety of different primary schools to take part in the moving on to secondary school summer project organised by the Children's Fund. The project was set up to help children feel more confident and prepared for their new school and to meet and mix with other children who may be transferring with them.

Children took part in a variety of other activities including art, ceramics, DJ-ing, sports, street-dance and drama as well as taster lessons in science, home economics and PE. They were also able to act out their feelings about the journey to their new schools on a double-decker bus on site. The project, which ran for two weeks at Kelsey Park School, also ran for two weeks at The Priory School for children in the Orpington area.

For more information about the summer project and other moving on to secondary school project activities please contact Sharon Bingham 020 8857 1512.
