Road accident reduction schemes agreed
A series of road safety measures designed to reduce accidents and casualties across the borough is set to go ahead following agreement at the Environment Portfolio meeting. The £266,000 engineering schemes funded by Transport for London (TFL) follows consultation with residents. The schemes should reduce the speed of vehicles and make junctions safer for drivers and pedestrians.
“This underlines our commitment to reducing road accidents even further. We have a long successful track record of reducing accidents in the borough. However, we will continue to target areas and junctions where there have been a high number of accidents” said Councillor George Taylor, Executive Councillor for the Environment.
The traffic calming schemes in:
- the Plaistow area, costing £102,000, will involve widening the pavement at strategic points along Burnt Ash Lane as well as placing a variety of warning signs. ‘Red surface dressing’ will be applied to existing ‘slow’ road markings; and traffic bollards and islands are being installed to aid pedestrians in crossing the road. The scheme is designed to slow traffic and reduce accidents. There have been 26 accidents and 31 casualties in the three year period;
- Sundridge Avenue, costing £48,000 will involve applying ‘surface dressing’ to highlight the speed limit and applying an anti-skid surface to bends and the pedestrian crossing points at the islands. In addition, 2 vehicle activated traffic signs have been erected. Further down the road at the Elmstead Lane Junction, there will be alterations to the mini roundabout. There have been 26 accidents and 35 casualties in the three year period;
- Main Road, Biggin Hill, costing £36,000, will involve building the kerb out on the road to eliminate the ‘merging lane’, and widen the road slightly on Salt Box Hill. ‘Anti-skid’ surfacing and a central hatched area will also be introduced. There have been 60 accidents and 88 casualties in the three year period; and
- Anerley Hill and Anerley Road, costing £80,000, will involve building a series of kerb build outs at junctions with Brunswick Place, Waldegrave Road, Hadlow Place, Hamlet Road and Maple Road. There have been 70 accidents and 80 casualties in the three year period.
The work on the schemes will take place over the next six months and disruption to local residents will be kept to a minimum.
