main content School travel plan pays off at Mead Road

Mead Road Infant School, Chislehurst, is celebrating the construction of their new playground shelter thanks to the school travel plan grant.

The borough’s smallest school was the first school to finish a travel plan in July last year and has just spent the £4,000 awarded for the successful completion of their school travel plan. Latest figures show that there are 36 schools that have completed a travel plan - with a further 22 currently working on their draft plans, which aim to cut school related congestion and enhance safety.

Louise French, School Travel Plan Officer said, “it is so nice to be able to see the travel plan process being so successful and to see schools really benefiting through measures drafted into their plan. The shelter is popular with parents who have taken the challenge of walking to school with their children. The ultimate success of school travel plans will be reducing the congestion outside our schools.”

The school travel plan initiative is a huge success with Bromley schools receiving over £200,000 in June for completing their plans. Currently over 50% of all the schools in the borough are engaged in the travel plan process with the Government requiring all schools to have a travel plan in place by 2010.

“We put our travel plan money towards the construction of a gazebo because we wanted to develop our outdoor provision. The parents have used it as a shelter on damp mornings. Staff, pupils, parents and governors are really thrilled with our gazebo. It looks good and blends in well with the surroundings. The children have used it as an outdoor classroom during lesson times and as a quiet area at playtimes and lunchtimes. It has been suggested that we form a school band and use the gazebo as a bandstand!” said Sue Waters, Head teacher.

A School Travel Plan is simply a document that aims to reduce congestion and improve safety around the school. This can be done through a variety of fun and educational schemes.
