main content Take away threat to burger vans

15 September 2005

Another illegal late night burger van has been seized in the Council’s continuing campaign against unlicensed street trading. Mr Mustafa Vadeoglu, aged 32 of Bromley Hill, pleaded guilty to selling food and drink from his van in East Street, Bromley, without a street trading licence. Following the hearing at Bromley Magistrates Court, he was fined £100 and ordered to pay £100 legal costs and an additional £300 towards the cost of seizure and storage of the van.

“As long as these unlicensed burger vans continue to trade, we’ll continue to seize them. We must get our message across in the strongest possible terms: we are not prepared to let this go. There are obvious food safety concerns as well as the associated problem of anti social behaviour with this sort of illegal trading” said Councillor George Taylor, Executive Councillor for the Environment.

The burger van was seized in April outside Neals Yard Remedies in East Street, after a late night surveillance operation by the Council’s Street Services Enforcement Team. During the twenty minute observation, several young people were seen purchasing food and drink from the van. When questioned, Mr Vadeoglu admitted to Enforcement Officers that he didn’t have a street traders licence. The burger van was then taken away to the Council’s secure compound pending disposal.
