main content Popular green garden waste scheme returns

13 April 2006

The ever popular seasonal garden waste service is back. The temporary sites are available each weekend to receive residents grass cuttings and pruning's and will operate until the end of the gardening season. The scheme follows last year’s success when over 56,000 visits saw 1,100 tonnes of garden waste collected for composting.

“The sites save gardeners having to travel to our busy permanent sites at Waldo Road or Churchfields Road to simply dispose of garden waste. Although the centres have dedicated green waste bays they are particularly busy at weekends. Please remember to only use the sites during operating times as it is an offence to leave your bags outside of these hours.” said John Bosley, Waste Contracts Manager for the Council.

The scheme is operating at the following locations:

  • Beckenham, St George’s Road car park off Albemarle Road.
  • Biggin Hill, Charles Darwin School, Jail Lane.
  • Bromley, Norman Park, Hook Farm Road entrance off Bromley Common (A21).
  • Green Street Green, Salt Depot, Shire Lane 'spur' off Sevenoaks Road.
  • Chislehurst, Thompson’s Plant and Garden Centre, Perry Street.

The free local sites are open from 11am until 4pm each Saturday and 8am to noon each Sunday. The sites can only accept bagged grass cuttings, pruning's (no bigger than 2” round) and dead plants. Large branches or trunks, trade waste, garden furniture, plastics, soil or rubble cannot be taken.

The tonnages collected contribute to recycling targets. Garden waste cannot be accepted outside of the operating hours. It is an offence to ‘dump’ waste outside the opening hours and fly tippers will be prosecuted. Residents will need to show their waste permit to use the temporary sites or proof of residence such as a recent utility bill.

The Council’s Waste Services Team advise that composting at home, where appropriate, is even better for the environment. Composting at home reduces the number of car journeys made to dispose of green waste and the need to purchase compost at garden centres. The Council has a limited number of free compost bins on offer. Residents should call the Blackwall hotline 0845 130 60 90 and quote “Bromley 5,000” to claim their free bin, there is no delivery charge. Additional bins can be purchased for £6 each.
