Bromley Mytime, the charitable leisure trust, is launching a campaign to encourage local residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Adults should exercise moderately for at least 30 minutes on five days a week according to experts, and yet more than 60% of people do far less. This level of inactivity contributes to health problems and currently costs the NHS £8.2bn per annum.
Active Bromley provides a variety of opportunities for all residents to become more physically active. This campaign launches in September with a series of family ‘Walkathons’ – and demonstrates that “non-sporty” activities including walking, gardening and dancing – can be equally effective as traditional sports and vigorous exercise.
Says campaign co-ordinator Annie Holden, “Active Bromley aims to get local people more active more often. You don’t need to be a sports fanatic to stay healthy. All that’s required is 30 minutes activity five times a week, enough to make you feel slightly out of breath and warm. Walking and gardening are everyday activities that are ideal because they can be built into your daily routine”.
The walkathon is held in conjunction with the Green Chain:
2 walks on Sunday 17 September: a guided walk of approx 1.5 miles at Crystal Palace Park.. . Meet at 10am at the One O’Clock Club.
Or a self-guided circular walk approx 2.25 miles from Bromley Tennis Centre (Orpington) through meadowlands and woods of Darrick Wood and back to the Tennis Centre. Turn up any time between 10am – 3pm - includes a Quiz for all the family!
Sunday 24 September:
Join a self-guided walk approx 2.25 miles, around the marked nature trail, in High Elms Country Park. Start the walk from High Elms Golf Course, any time from 10am – 3pm. Refreshments available to buy at the High Elms Golf Club (including hot meals and Sunday lunch).
