Greening Our Streets
Over 300 trees are being planted in this year’s street tree-planting programme. The scheme, aimed at keeping Bromley green, will include the planting of species such as Rowan, Field Maple and Birch. Where possible, at each site, the same species of tree that has been used in the past will be planted. Nearby residents are also invited to suggest areas that they feel would benefit from replacement trees.
“In response to the current dry period we are experiencing, we have carried out the additional watering of young street trees. We are asking residents to keep an eye out for those that look a bit dry in between these periods and to water them if able.” said Andrew Wright, the Council’s Woodland and Trees Officer.
Residents are being asked to suggest the areas that they think are most in need of tree planting by the end of August 2006. Tree specialists will survey all proposed sites and investigate whether they will be suitable. This will involve taking into consideration factors such as telephone wires and pavement width, as well as looking at whether the tree will enhance the area aesthetically.
The trees planted will be approximately 3 metres in height and every new tree will have its own ‘irrigation tube’. The trees will be watered through these tubes until they are old enough to be self-sufficient. Signs will be placed on each tree stake asking residents to water them if they get too dry in between watering periods. Work will be carried out by the Council’s arboricultural contractor Gristwood and Toms.
