Landlord's £1500 energy saving allowance
Private landlords could be missing out on the chance to claim a deduction of up to £1500 on each property, against their profits, for energy saving improvements. All landlords that are liable to pay income tax can claim the deduction for loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, draught proofing and insulation for hot water systems. Landlords should check their tax return or contact their local tax office for further information on how to claim the allowance.
A Council spokesperson said: “Bromley Council is committed to improving the energy efficiency of the private rented sector. Energy efficiency improvements can help landlords meet their legal requirements, whilst supporting their reputation as a landlord who takes the quality of their properties seriously and delivers a professional service for tenants.”
Energy efficiency improvements are a win-win situation for landlords. They can increase the value of the property and increase its rental potential. In addition, insulating a property means lower running costs for tenants and a more comfortable living environment, which could make them more likely to stay for a longer period of time.
