Waldo Reuse and Recycling Centre Plays it Safe
Additional safety precautions are being implemented at Waldo Road Waste and Recycling Centre, following its reopening. The site had been closed after the recent fire, but - after intensive safety checks by structural engineers and health and safety experts, the Centre was given the go ahead to open for business again. The new procedures apply to everyone, but particularly to 'traders', who use a specific part of the site and often dispose of different types of waste.
“Safety is integral to the way the site is run on a day-to-day basis. But, in response to recent events, safety precautions have been stepped up. Those working at the site are even more vigilant - to make sure that hazardous waste does not enter the site. We recognise that it has been a difficult time for customers who regularly use the site and can only apologise for inevitable inconvenience that has been caused. We are also mindful of residents living nearby who are our neighbours and grateful for their co-operation through what has been a difficult time" said Jim Cowan, Senior Waste Adviser for Bromley Council.
The new precautions mean that those entering the site are checked for flammable or hazardous waste. Ignitable fluids, such as white spirit, have been banned, as well as other fire hazards such as coals and used barbeques.
There have also been restrictions placed on traders wanting to dispose of their waste - the site is closed to traders on Saturdays and Sundays to prevent overuse. Traders are being requested to wear high visibility jackets and a hard hat as well as suitable footwear when disposing of waste at the site.
The site was first established in the late 19th century. It underwent a £1million revamp last year which included the introduction of recycling facilities. The recycling facilities have increased the amount being recycled. Now, over 44% of all household waste being disposed at the Waldo and Churchfields Road sites is being recycled.

Notes to editors:
In the last financial year, 2005/2006, 33,300 tonnes of ‘bulky waste’ was deposited by domestic users at the Waldo Road and Churchfields Road sites., which is separate from weekly waste and fortnightly recycling collections.
