main content Dangerous Christmas Candle Decoration

21 December 2006

Bromley Trading Standards has received a complaint about a table candle decoration which caught fire and seriously damaged the customer’s dining table.

The decoration was bought from a local shop and Trading Standards Officers are warning anyone who may have bought a similar product not to use it or use it with an alternative decoration in the candle-holders.

The decoration is a circular frame about 9½ inches (25cms) diameter, wound round with plastic ‘crystal’ beads on a wire thread. Equally spaced around the frame are four metal candle-holders designed to take tea light candles.

No cause has been found for the fire yet but it poses a serious risk if used with candles.

The product from Danish firm Lisbeth Dahl was bought from a local shop but may be available across South London. After receiving the complaint, the shop is now selling it with flower decoration in place of candles.

Bob Gilham from Bromley Trading Standards said: “We would like to remind everyone to use candles with care, not to use them in draughts, not to use them near loose hanging items such as curtains or Christmas decorations, not to leave them unattended and not to use tea lights with plastic bases.”

Anyone who believes they may have bought the decoration should contact Bromley Trading Standards on 020 8313 4830 or the Office of Fair Trading’s advice service, Consumer Direct, on 08454 04 05 06, who will pass information to them.
