Primary Modern Foreign Languages Conference
Thursday 30 November saw the official launch of Primary Modern Foreign Languages at the EDC in Princes Plain. The Local Authority hosted an all-day conference in order to raise the profile of languages in the primary schools in Bromley.
The rationale behind the conference was the government’s National Languages Strategy. This emphasises that by September 2009 every child throughout Keystage 2 should have the opportunity to study a foreign language and develop their interest in the culture of other nations.
The day commenced with a keynote speech from Dr Lid King, National Director of Languages at the DfES. He presented the background of the Strategy and was followed by Caroline Conlon, Regional Manager at CILT, who spoke in detail about support networks which are available for those who are teaching languages.
The day progressed with seven workshops which ranged from “using songs to ensure progress in KS2” to “keeping boys keen”. The 73 teachers who took part were left enthused and motivated about the whole initiative. The British Council were present to advise on funding and the setting up of international links.
Lunchtime also had an international theme in the food which was served, and during the break, the Spanish Embassy performed traditional Spanish songs which could be used in classroom exercises. Throughout the day there were also opportunities for delegates to visit the exhibitors’ stands. The day concluded with a presentation from Richard Winston concerning “Making Primary Modern Foreign Languages Happen.”
Overall, the day had a very positive impact and demonstrated everyone working together to develop their understanding of languages in the primary curriculum and their commitment to the implementation of the National Languages Strategy in Primary Schools.
