Self employment opportunities piloted
A new scheme to support people with learning difficulties to set up their own micro-enterprise will be piloted by Bromley Mencap’s JobMatch employment scheme, thanks to Council funding. £5,000 has been allocated to help suitable candidates purchase equipment and materials to start their businesses, aiming for 3 micro-enterprises to be established by March 2008. A micro-enterprise is a small business, typically owned by one person and usually there are not any other people working for the business.
Michael Tickner, Executive Councillor for the local economy, who approved the funding, said “Micro-enterprises can enable people with learning disabilities to achieve paid employment whilst contributing to the local economy through entrepreneurship and innovation.”
Eddie Lynch, Chief Executive said “Setting up their own small businesses will empower candidates the freedom to choose when they work, give them control over their own finances and assessment of their own support requirements”.
JobMatch is a supported employment agency run by Bromley Mencap, an independent voluntary organisation. It has been operating since 1993, providing work preparation training, work experience placements, job search assistance on on-the job training and support in employment for people with learning difficulties.
