main content Star rating for Social Services

04 December 2006

Services for some of the borough’s most vulnerable people continue to improve, that’s the verdict of the Government’s Commission for Social Care Inspection, which has awarded the Council’s social services a two-star rating in its annual performance assessment.

Most importantly, the rating recognises there are good prospects for further improvement. The rating acknowledges the Council is delivering consistently high quality social care with promising prospects for further improvement. It also recognises significant progress during the last 12 months in improving the services for those with learning disabilities.

Executive Councillor for Adult and Community Services Councillor Graham Arthur said:

“This is a marvellous effort by our staff, who provide care for some of the most vulnerable people in the borough. I am particularly delighted that the inspectors have recognised the real improvements we are making for those adults with learning disabilities.

While this is great news there is no room for complacency. We are committed to providing excellent social care for the borough and will continue to develop services to allow people to live as independently as possible. We are determined to keep making further progress in 2007.

Ironically, this good news comes as we hear for the fifth year running the Council will not receive enough government funding to even cover the cost of inflation, let alone the increased demand and rising costs of many Council services.”

After assessing social care services for adults and older people, and their capacity for improvement, CSCI awards a star rating from zero to three.
