Beetles, yeah, yeah, yeah…
He may not win any beauty contests, but the harmless stag beetle doesn’t deserve to be an endangered species!
Adults and children alike are invited to find out more about how they can help Britain’s largest beetle at two events run by Bromley Parks and Countryside Rangers during the February half term.
The events will take place between 2 and 4pm on Tuesday 14 February in Croydon Road Recreation Ground and on Wednesday 15 February at the children’s play area in Harvington Park.
Park Rangers will be on hand to lead the mini-beast hunt and provide more information on stag beetles in particular. They will also fill and drill buckets brought along with woodchips so that these can be buried in the garden to encourage stag beetles to lay their eggs in them.
Bromley Countryside Ranger Fiona Annal said: “Stag beetle larvae take at least three and a half years to become fully grown beetles. They require dead wood for this stage of their lives. You can help by burying dead wood and creating log piles, as well as the buckets we fill at the event.”
More information is available from Bromley Park Rangers on 01689 862815.
