main content Have your say on “Rights of Way”

31 July 2006

A wide ranging consultation on the borough’s 300 plus urban and rural footpaths, bridleways and byways, is underway. The results will help form part of the Rights of Way Improvement Programme which aims to identify improvements and long term sustainability for the rights of way network.

“We know residents are passionate about the green environment, but footpaths are not just rural routes to the countryside. Many urban footpaths in our towns provide access to local amenities such as schools, shops and parks. If you have any particular concerns, now is the time to raise them. We can then address these concerns when formulating the plan” said Peter Turvey, Enforcement and Technical Support Manager.

Registered public rights of way are maintained by the Council. Many footpaths do not have this status and their upkeep may not be the responsibility of the Council. This is the case with many rear alleyways where the adjacent property owners are responsible. A registered public right of way is:

  • A footpath for pedestrian use only;
  • a bridleway for horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians; or
  • a byway for some vehicles, horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians.

Residents are encouraged to make their views on rights of ways known by completing a questionnaire. Questionnaires completed and returned by 1st September will be entered in a free prize draw to win £100. For further information on the Rights of Way Improvement Plan or copies of the questionnaire, call the Street Services Help Desk on 020 8313 4621 or visit www.bromley.gov.uk/neatstreet.
