Kelsey Students in Flowerbed Creation
Students of Kelsey Park Sports College went into a ‘flowerbed frenzy’ as over 100 pupils competed for the title of ‘best flowerbed design’. The competition, organised by the school and the Friends of Kelsey Park group, encouraged pupils to think creatively about their local environment. Carl Lockyer, age 12, won the accolade for his highly colourful display of Petunia, Lobelia, Calendula and Antirrhinums which have been planted in the Bridge Bed, near the Stone Park Avenue entrance to the park.
“The response received for the competition was phenomenal with many top quality entries. Carl’s display was chosen because it was evident that he had put a lot of thought and imagination into designing it. He carefully used the space to achieve an effect of rippling water to complement the lake in the park. It is great to see young people getting involved with their local environment in a positive way and it is hoped that such ideas will encourage young people to become interested in horticulture as a career.” said Diana Wallis a representative from the Friends of Kelsey Park.
The competition was open to all year 7 pupils from Kelsey Park Sports College (11 - 12 year olds). Over 100 entries were received and presented to a team of judges, which included representatives from the Friends of Kelsey Park group, Holwood (the Council’s parks contractor), Bromley Council and the College. Diana Wallis, from the Friends of Kelsey Park presented Carl with his Prizewinner's certificate.
Kelsey Park, located in Beckenham, covers 79.66 acres, which include natural woodland, lakes and abundant wildlife species. The park also has many horticultural features, including a rose garden and herbaceous border established in 2005. The park has an active ‘Friends’ group who carry out a number of practical conservation tasks and awareness raising events.
